Brax Technologies has launched an Indiegogo campaign for the open_slate, a privacy-focused tablet with hardware kill switches, support for multiple operating systems, and user-replaceable components. The company, which previously released the Brax3 smartphone, is targeting privacy enthusiasts with a device that lets you physically disconnect the microphone, cameras, GPS, Bluetooth, and WiFi at the hardware level.
The tablet features a 30.5 cm (12 inch) display and runs on a MediaTek Genio 720 processor, an unusual choice for a mobile device but one that supports the mainline Linux kernel. Brax is collaborating with Canonical to improve Ubuntu compatibility on the device, while Collabora engineers are actively upstreaming Genio 720 support to the mainline Linux kernel, with initial integration landing in Linux 6.14. The company warns that some features like WiFi 7 may initially work better under Android than Linux, but emphasizes their focus on proper mainline kernel support rather than device-specific forks to ensure long-term compatibility. That means the open_slate can run Ubuntu, Ubuntu Touch, Yocto Project, and BraxOS (a de-Googled Android variant), or you can install your own operating system. The tablet comes in two configurations: a standard model with a 2400 x 1600 pixel 90 Hz IPS LCD display, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage, and a Pro model with a 2.8K 120 Hz OLED display, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage.
Repairability is a core feature of the design. Remove two screws and you can access an M.2 2280 slot for PCIe 2.0 storage or a network card. The 8,000 mAh battery requires no tools at all, just slide a switch to release it. There's also a glass panel on the back that provides a view of the motherboard without opening the chassis. The tablet includes dual USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C ports, a USB 2.0 Type-A port, mini DisplayPort, a 3.5mm audio jack, and WiFi 6E with Bluetooth 5.3.
Early bird pricing starts at $470 (€433) for the standard model and $630 (€580) for the Pro version, with retail prices expected to be $600 (€552) and $800 (€736) respectively. Optional accessories include a keyboard and folio case for $90 (€83) and an active stylus with 4096 pressure levels for $60 (€55). The tablet is expected to ship in September 2026.
