Frore Systems' AirJet solid-state cooling modules have been a tantalizing prospect since their 2023 debut, promising fanless, silent thermal management with no moving parts. They have been slow to appear in shipping products, but AAEON is now putting them to work in the UP Xtreme PTL Edge Air, an Intel Panther Lake mini PC that operates at under 21 dBA. By replacing the thick passive heatsink of the original UP Xtreme PTL Edge with what appears to be four AirJet modules, AAEON cut the profile to 35.8 mm and dropped the weight to 710 grams (1.57 lbs), making the system 35% thinner and 43% lighter. The trade-off is a narrower operating temperature range of -10 to 45°C, compared to the original's 0 to 60°C rating.

Under the hood, the UP Xtreme PTL Edge Air runs Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processors, topping out with the Core Ultra X7 358H and its 16-core CPU, 12-core Intel Arc B390 integrated GPU, and a combined 180 TOPS of AI compute across CPU, GPU, and NPU. Memory maxes out at 128 GB of dual-channel DDR5-7200 across two SODIMM slots, and two M.2 2280 NVMe slots provide storage with PCIe Gen 5 support. Connectivity includes dual 2.5 GbE Ethernet via Intel I226-IT controllers, two USB4 Type-C ports with DisplayPort 2.1 Alt Mode, two HDMI 2.1 outputs, and an M.2 2230 E-key slot for optional Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

What makes this more than a standard industrial box is its 40-pin GPIO header, a feature more commonly found on single-board computers like the Raspberry Pi than on x86 systems packing this much compute. AAEON officially supports Ubuntu 24.04 LTS alongside Windows 11 IoT Enterprise, and upstream Linux support for Panther Lake has been landing steadily since kernel 6.12, with NPU drivers, thermal management, and Arc graphics firmware all in place. GPIO pin control for the header comes through AAEON's own pinctrl-upboard driver, an open-source out-of-tree module separate from that upstream work, which added support for the UPX-PTL01 board (the UP Xtreme PTL platform this system is built on) and compatibility with kernel 6.17 and newer in its v1.1.9 release. Two RS-232/422/485 COM ports and a wide 19 to 36V DC input range fill out the industrial side of the spec sheet.

Frore Systems recently showcased the AirJet Mini G2 at Computex 2026, claiming a 50% improvement in cooling capacity over the original, and Lenovo showed a concept notebook using the technology around the same time. The modules use ultrasonic piezoelectric membranes to generate high-pressure airflow without fans, and they add meaningful cost to a system. The Core Ultra 5 325 configuration of the UP Xtreme PTL Edge Air is listed on AAEON's e-shop starting at $1,366 (€1,265), though it is currently out of stock.
