The 8849 Tank X redefines what a rugged smartphone can be by cramming a 1080p DLP projector, a 1200-lumen camping light, and a laptop-sized battery into a device that weighs 750 grams (1.65 lbs) and measures 3.19 cm (1.26 inches) thick. It is not subtle, but for outdoor enthusiasts who want to project movies at a campsite or use their phone as a power bank for days on end, the Tank X delivers a genuinely unique feature set.
Powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 8200 processor with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, the phone runs Android on a 6.78-inch, 2460 x 1080 pixel display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The built-in projector outputs at 220 lumens with laser autofocus, a notable upgrade from the 720p, 100-lumen projectors found in previous Tank models. The 17,600mAh battery (68.1 Wh) can keep the phone running for a week under light use and supports 120W fast charging plus 10W reverse charging to top off other devices.
The camera system includes a 50MP Sony IMX766 primary sensor, a 64MP Omnivision night vision camera, an 8MP 3X telephoto, and a 50MP front-facing camera. Connectivity covers 5G, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, and GPS, along with dual nano SIM support or a SIM plus microSD configuration. The Tank X also retains a 3.5mm headphone jack and an IR blaster. It carries an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.
The 8849 Tank X is now available for pre-order at $550 (€505).
