Shelly's first mmWave presence sensor ships with full local control out of the box. The Shelly Presence Gen4 runs on an ESP32-C6 chip with 8 MB of flash, supports MQTT, UDP, webhooks, and onboard scripting, and integrates with Home Assistant as a Local Push device with no cloud dependency. That makes it a natural fit for self-hosted smart home setups where keeping traffic off third-party servers is a priority.

The sensor uses 60-64 GHz mmWave radar to track up to ten people simultaneously across ten customizable zones, covering up to 60 m² (650 sq ft) with a 140-degree horizontal field of view when wall-mounted. Unlike passive infrared motion sensors, mmWave detects micro-movements from stationary occupants, so automations can respond to a room being occupied rather than just someone walking through it. Height-based filtering lets you exclude pets and robot vacuums from triggering zone events, and a built-in light sensor reports ambient conditions for lighting-aware automations.

Connectivity covers the bases: Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5 LE, and Zigbee 3.0 are all built in, with Matter-over-Wi-Fi for interoperability with Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, and Samsung SmartThings. In Zigbee mode, the sensor pairs with a coordinator through ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT, giving flexibility in how it slots into an existing setup. That path is still rough around the edges, though. Community reports on the Shelly forum describe Zigbee2MQTT initially flagging the device as unsupported before exposing a bare presence true/false state, with occupancy sometimes dropping to null while the sensor is still detecting someone in the room, and ZHA users have noted the ambient light sensor isn't exposed at all over Zigbee. For those wanting to replace the stock firmware outright, the community shelly-gen4-esphome project can flash ESPHome onto several Gen4 devices directly through the stock web UI, though the Presence Gen4 is not yet among the models it supports. An openHAB feature request for Presence Gen4 support was also opened in mid-2026, pointing to demand beyond the Home Assistant ecosystem. The entire unit measures just 6.4 x 4.1 x 2.6 cm (2.5 x 1.6 x 1.0 in) and draws power over USB-C at 2.5 W nominal.

The Shelly Presence Gen4 is available now in North America at $85 (€70), with European availability already underway.
