Less than a week after KDE Plasma 6.8 shipped as the project's first Wayland-only release, the KDE team has pushed Plasma 6.8.1 with the first batch of stability fixes and updated translations. The point release follows KDE's bugfix release schedule for stable branches, which spaces updates at increasing intervals, addressing small but meaningful issues reported since the 2026-10-14 launch.

Plasma 6.8 itself marked a significant milestone on multiple fronts. The release dropped the X11 session entirely, making Wayland the sole display protocol for Plasma desktops after 30 years of KDE history. X11 applications still run through XWayland, but the session option is gone from login screens. The move lets the Plasma team shed legacy maintenance burden and focus development on Wayland performance and features. For users on hardware with incomplete Wayland driver support, the transition could be bumpy, though NVIDIA's proprietary driver has improved its Wayland support considerably in recent kernel and driver releases.

Beyond the display server shift, Plasma 6.8 introduced the Union theming system with support for QtWidgets applications like Dolphin and Kate, a new backup tool called Kup for automated backups to external media, and audio recording in Spectacle for capturing system and microphone audio alongside screen content. The system monitor gained per-CPU task assignment and VRAM load now displays as a percentage. Steam windows also picked up proper shadows and rounded corners for better visual consistency with native Plasma applications.

The full list of changes in 6.8.1 is available in the changelog. Users on rolling-release distributions like openSUSE Tumbleweed and Arch Linux can expect the update shortly, while fixed-release distributions will pick it up in their next Plasma package refresh.
