Government and critical-infrastructure buyers now have an unusual option for edge AI video analytics: Planet Technology's AIS-1000, a turnkey NVR built around a Raspberry Pi 5 and a Hailo-8L AI accelerator. The station handles up to eight RTSP IP camera streams with on-device inference at 13 TOPS, running AI models for human detection, line crossing, crowd counting, face recognition, fire and smoke detection, and even an LLM-powered intelligent video search. All of that processing happens locally on Broadcom's BCM2712 quad-core Cortex-A76 SoC, 8 GB of LPDDR4X RAM, and a 1 TB NVMe SSD, sealed inside a metal enclosure measuring 88.7 x 68.2 x 41 mm (3.5 x 2.7 x 1.6 in) and weighing 287 g (0.6 lbs). The entire system draws up to 27 W over USB-C.
The price, $3,640 (€3,350), is not a typo. Planet Technology estimates the raw hardware is worth roughly $400 to $500 (€370 to €460). The premium buys NDAA and TAA compliance, certifications required for U.S. government procurement and high-security deployments, plus the proprietary analytics software stack. Each unit is managed through its own local web interface for configuration, real-time display, AI model updates, and historical playback. There is no cloud dashboard connecting multiple stations, so every AIS-1000 operates as a self-contained node.
The hardware underneath is identical to what hobbyists already pair with Frigate, the open-source NVR that integrates with Home Assistant. Frigate lists the Hailo-8L as officially recommended hardware, though getting the combination running requires some attention to the driver layer: Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm ships a kernel-level Hailo driver that conflicts with the version Frigate requires and must be replaced manually, while the newer Trixie release installs the Hailo driver through DKMS and sidesteps that conflict entirely. As Jeff Geerling has documented, a Raspberry Pi 5 with the official AI HAT+ running Frigate can handle four to five camera streams with real-time object detection for around $150 (€140) in parts. The AIS-1000 illustrates how much compliance paperwork, custom software, and niche-market margins can multiply the cost of commodity single-board computer hardware.
