Pine64 has announced the PineTime Pro, a new open source smartwatch that brings significant upgrades over the original PineTime that launched in 2021 for $27 (€25). The company, known for producing developer-focused single-board computers and devices designed to run open source software, hasn't revealed pricing or a release date yet, but the new model promises several key improvements including an AMOLED display, GPS support, additional sensors like blood oxygen monitoring, and a digital crown with an extra button.

The original PineTime featured a 1.3 inch (3.3 cm), 240 x 240 pixel IPS touchscreen with a Nordic Semiconductor nRF52832 chip running at 64 MHz, 64KB of RAM, and basic health tracking with an accelerometer and heart rate sensor. The new PineTime Pro should offer more vivid colors and deeper blacks with its AMOLED screen (which also saves power when displaying dark backgrounds), standalone GPS navigation without a phone, expanded health tracking capabilities, and new navigation options through the digital crown.

The announcement comes as Pine64 has paused production of several existing devices including the PinePhone, PineNote, and PineTab2 in response to the ongoing global RAM shortage. The company says more details about the PineTime Pro will be revealed closer to launch.
