Ubuntu 25.04 Released With Enhanced User Experience and New Features in GNOME Desktop Environment

Ubuntu 25.04, codenamed “Plucky Puffin,” has been officially released, showcasing a range of enhancements aimed at improving the user experience. This latest version is powered by the Linux kernel 6.14 and is classified as a non-long-term support (non-LTS) release, offering nine months of support until January 2026.

The release includes the GNOME 48 desktop environment, which introduces features such as notification grouping to reduce desktop clutter and improved handling of Flatpak applications. A new Wellbeing feature has also been added, allowing users to set screen time limits and receive reminders for movement and eye care.

For laptop users, a battery charge limit feature can now be set through the system settings, helping to prolong battery lifespan by managing charge thresholds effectively. Additionally, Ubuntu 25.04 includes new wallpapers selected through a community competition, reflecting both the mascot and abstract themes.

The update also brings visual improvements with updated app icons and better integration with GNOME’s accent color system. Key applications have received updates, including LibreOffice 25.2.2, Thunderbird 128.0, and VLC 3.0.21.

Other notable changes include:

  • Papers as the default document viewer.
  • NVIDIA Dynamic Boost enabled by default.
  • Enhanced support for ARM hardware.
  • A new Ubuntu WSL image for Microsoft’s recent architecture.
