Lenovo has announced the ThinkPad P16s Gen 5, a 16-inch mobile workstation that brings a significant first to AMD-powered laptops. The new model marks the first time LPCAMM2 memory technology has been paired with AMD processors, supporting up to 96 GB of RAM. The P16s Gen 5 will be available with either Intel Core Ultra Series 3 H processors or AMD Ryzen AI 400 chips, with the Ryzen HX 9 serving as the top AMD option.
Unlike the previous ThinkPad P16s Gen 4, which used different chassis designs for Intel and AMD variants, the Gen 5 unifies both platforms into a single mechanical design. This consolidation brings another notable improvement for AMD users. The AMD models can now be configured with dedicated graphics cards, including up to the Nvidia RTX Pro 2000 Blackwell with 8 GB VRAM, 4,352 CUDA cores, and 16 GB GDDR7 memory on the desktop variant. Previous AMD-based P16s models lacked dedicated GPU options entirely.
The laptop features a 40.6 cm (16-inch) display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, available in either WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) IPS or 2.8K (2,880 x 1,800) OLED configurations. The system includes Wi-Fi 7 and 5G connectivity, an SD card reader, and battery options ranging from 60 Wh to 90 Wh. The chassis uses an aluminum display cover and magnesium palmrest, keeping the weight at 1.75 kg (3.9 lbs). However, as a more affordable workstation option, the P16s Gen 5 omits some premium features found in higher-end models like the ThinkPad P1 Gen 9, including Thunderbolt 5 support and multiple M.2 SSD slots.
For Linux users, the ThinkPad P16s line has a strong track record. Lenovo has certified previous generations of the P16s for Ubuntu and Fedora, and the AMD Ryzen AI 400 processors are supported in Linux kernel 6.10 and later, with recent improvements enabling NPU acceleration for LLMs through ROCm 7.2. The Nvidia RTX Pro 2000 Blackwell requires open kernel modules rather than proprietary drivers, aligning with NVIDIA's transition to open-source GPU drivers for its latest architectures. While official Linux certification for the Gen 5 has not yet been announced, Lenovo's consistent support for Linux on previous P16s models suggests similar certification is likely.
The Intel-based ThinkPad P16s Gen 5 will be available in May 2026, while the AMD variant is expected to launch in June 2026. Lenovo has not yet announced pricing for the new model.
