Most mobile controllers clamp your phone in landscape and call it a day, but 8BitDo's FlipPad takes a different approach. The compact gamepad plugs into your phone's USB-C port and swivels up to magnetically attach over the bottom of the display, turning the whole thing into something that feels like a classic handheld played in portrait orientation. There are no thumbsticks here. The layout is built entirely around a d-pad, ABXY face buttons, Start and Select, plus L1/R1 and L2/R2 triggers, all positioned on the front face of the controller rather than on shoulder edges. It is a controller designed specifically for retro emulation, and it looks the part.

The wired USB-C connection is a deliberate trade-off. Latency is essentially zero compared to Bluetooth alternatives, which matters when you are playing anything timing-sensitive. The flip side is that phones with offset USB-C ports may not seat properly, so it is worth checking your device's port placement before ordering. 8BitDo says the USB-C connector is rated for 10,000 insertions and the magnetic hinge for 6,000 open/close cycles. The whole thing weighs 32 grams (1.1 ounces) and works with most phone cases, so there is no need to strip your phone down before playing. Both iOS and Android are supported, with official Apple certification.

The FlipPad is available for preorder at $30 (€28) in two colorways: the G Classic with burgundy ABXY buttons and the new EDC Black Edition. Orders ship starting 2026-07-30.
