Systemd Community Develops Experimental Linux Distribution Named ParticleOS
The systemd community is developing an experimental Linux distribution named ParticleOS. This initiative aims to provide users with a fully customizable and immutable operating system, allowing complete control over system images. The announcement was made during a presentation by systemd maintainer Daan De Meyer at the FOSDEM 2025 event.
ParticleOS empowers users to select their base distribution, choose installed packages, and cryptographically sign their images for enhanced security. It employs the mkosi tool for building images, enabling users to create an image-based Linux distribution tailored to their specifications.
This distribution supports various Linux base systems, including Fedora and Arch Linux, with potential for additional distributions as configuration files become available. ParticleOS is designed to stay current with the latest systemd features, often integrating improvements ahead of broader adoption in mainstream distributions.
Currently, ParticleOS appears to cater primarily to developers who require extensive control over their systems. Its specialized nature may limit its appeal to general users without experience in custom image building or systemd. Further information about its specifications can be found on its GitHub repository.
